I scheduled a consultation with Attorney Cristina Mayfield specifically to discuss the legal adoption of a minor who is already in the U.S. but does not have legal immigration status. Despite providing this information in advance, it quickly became clear during the meeting that Ms. Mayfield had done little to no preparation. She appeared unfamiliar with basic aspects of immigration-related adoption law and repeatedly had to look up information on her computer—much of which should have been known ahead of time or researched prior to our appointment. At one point, she even asked if the child had a green card, which was perplexing and frustrating, as the entire purpose of the consultation was to explore options for a child without legal status. It felt like she hadn’t reviewed the background
